Title: 'Cochlear Implant Candidacy and Follow-Up: A Team Approach to Looking Beyond the Audiogram '
Track: 2 - Audiological Services
Keyword(s): cochlear implant candidacy team collaboration
Learning Objectives:
  1. identify professionals, agencies, and test battery included in a pre and post cochlear implant assessment

  3. gain useful information to support parent decision making pre and post cochlear implantation

Abstract:

Infants and toddlers are being considered for cochlear implantation at younger ages. Cochlear implants (CIs) are now being implanted and activated by 12 months of age. This provides babies with access to sound sooner. How do parents come to an informed decision during the first few months of an infant’s life? How do professionals guide parents to have realistic expectations depending on their child’s overall abilities? What are influential factors in a child’s progress? How is a toddler’s progress with a new CI monitored over time? A cochlear implant team consisting of professionals and parents is key to this sensitive decision process and positive outcomes. The protocol and cochlear implant team approach at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in collaboration with Children’s Ear, Nose and Throat Specialists, PLLC will be presented. Three cases will be highlighted to show team collaboration pre and post CI at specific time intervals. The attendee will be introduced to the recommended series of assessments, professionals, and agencies involved. The communication protocol and monitoring system will be presented.
