Title: 'Longitudinal Tracking of Infant Hearing: Electrophysiologic Thresholds to Behavioral Thresholds '
Track: 2 - Audiological Services
Keyword(s): progressive hearing loss, ASSR, ABR, behavioral audiometry, infant
Learning Objectives:
  1. Quantify audiological changes necessary to diagnose a hearing loss as progressive
  2. Determine follow up schedules and possible early intervention strategies to work on with parents to identify changes in hearing earlier

Abstract:

The incidence of progressive hearing loss in infancy is currently unknown. Since the inception of newborn hearing screening, hearing loss can be identified within the first few weeks of life. This introduces a challenge for counseling parents on the likelihood of the hearing loss progressing. Currently professionals are cautious about labeling hearing loss as progressive based on changes noted from auditory brainstem response/auditory steady state response (ABR/ASSR) to first or second behavioral findings, unless there is an undeniable decrease. This informational gap is likely due to paucity of longitudinal data objectively quantifying hearing loss from ABR/ASSR thresholds to first behavioral thresholds and then followed over time in a large cohort. The aim of this pilot study is to identify changes from ABR/ASSR to first behavioral and second behavioral audiometry in order to describe the changes observed from a group of 10 children. Description of threshold shift will help professionals determine if a hearing loss is progressive in nature within the first two years of an infant’s life. At the conclusion of this lecture an attendee will be able to quantify audiological changes necessary to diagnose a hearing loss as progressive; determine follow up schedules and possible early intervention strategies to work on with parents to identify changes in hearing earlier.
