Title: 'Late Onset Hearing Loss: To what Extent can Collecting Risk Factors Help Predict Hearing Loss by Late Infancy'
Track: 2 - Audiological Services
Keyword(s): Risk factors, tandem, OAEs, AABR
Learning Objectives:
  1. Understand the value of collecting risk factors for late onset hearing loss at the time of the newborn hearing screening.

Abstract:

The prevalence of hearing loss increases from 1 to 6 per 1,000 at birth to approximately 14.9% by 6-19 years old. While screening itself can not pick up late onset hearing loss, collecting risk factors can help predict who is at a higher risk for developing late onset hearing loss. 533 babies at the duPont Hospital for Children who were screened for hearing shortly after birth also had risk factor information collected between March 2011 through December 2012. A large portion of this group were treated in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Our screening protocol consists of Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs) and Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR) tested in tandem. For more serious risk factors for hearing loss, Class A, a diagnostic ABR is recommended every three months. For less serious risk factors, Class B, a behavioral evaluation with Tympanometry, OAEs and Middle Ear Muscle Reflexes is recommended for nine months of age. Testing at one year of age if there are any concerns is recommended by babies who pass their screening and do not have any risk factors for late onset hearing loss. The prevalence of hearing loss at the time of follow up was assessed for each of these groups: Babies with Class A, babies with Class B and babies with no risk factors for late onset hearing loss. This information is used to predict the effectiveness of screening for risk factors at the time of the hearing screen in flagging babies for the potential for future hearing loss.
