ABSTRACT INFORMATION
Title: 'Improvement in Loss to Follow-up of Newborn Hearing Screening: A lesson from Louisiana Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program'
Track: 6 - Follow-up, Tracking and Data Management
Keyword(s): Trend analysis; Lost to Follow-up; Newborn heating screening; Data linkage
Learning Objectives:
  1. To present data sources and methods used to conduct trend analysis of loss to follow-up of newborn hearing screening
  2. To discuss interventions which effectively reduce loss to follow-up of newborn hearing screening

Abstract:

Newborns who fail initial hearing screening are required to follow up to get further tests to confirm diagnosis of hearing loss. Loss to follow-up (LTF) of hearing screening is defined if a newborn who fails the initial hearing test before hospital discharge but does not follow up further hearing tests to confirm diagnosis of hearing loss. Although rates of LTF are considered high in Louisiana, with great efforts of Louisiana Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program (EHDI), LTF was significantly improved in the last several years. The study aimed to analyze the trend of LTF of hearing screening among newborns who failed initial hearing screening tests prior to hospital discharge, and evaluate accomplishments in improving LTF from 2004 to 2011 in Louisiana. Through trend analysis of LTF, evaluating accomplishments to reduce LTF is helpful to refine plans and strategies to enhance quality of newborn hearing detection and intervention in state. The data of Louisiana EHDI surveillance system linked with birth certificates were used for analysis. The study included 24,516 newborns who were born between 2007 and 2011 in Louisiana and failed initial hearing screening tests prior to hospital discharge. Log-linear models were conducted to evaluate the trend of LTF. The presentation will show findings of trend analysis from 2004 to 2011 in all races and by race/ethnicity and time periods before and after 2007 when a major reduction of the rate of LTF occurred, which was contributed by successful interventions including hiring follow-up coordinators, holding individual hospital meetings with birthing hospitals, frequently organizing regional LA EHDI Task Force meetings, and providing follow-up reports to LA EHDI hospital supervisors. We recommend that effective cooperation between EHDI Program and hospitals through outreach activities and patient contact is encouraged to continue and expand to reduce LTF rate.
