Title: 'Tennessee's Midwife Collaborative: Forming Partnerships to Offer Otoacoustic Emissions Hearing Screens to the Homebirth Population' Track: 1 - EHDI Program Enhancement Keyword(s): OAE Midwife Collaborative Learning Objectives: Learner will be able to describe the strategy Tennessee's EHDI Program used to select midwives for the OAE screening collaborative. Learner will be able to describe the changes seen in the percent of babies screened for Tennessee midwives who are using OAE equipment. Learner will be able to describe Tennessee's plan for expansion of midwife collaborative and consider ways a midwife collaborative could be implemented in their own state EHDI program. Abstract: Late in 2011 and early in 2012, Tennessee’s EHDI Program embarked on a initiative to offer hearing screens to their homebirth population. TN EHDI provided OAE screening units and training to six midwifery practices across the state. Two midwiferies are sharing one device. Four do not share. Some practitioners who have an OAE unit are collaborating with other midwives in their community/region to provide screens to additional families. While Tennessee has not yet seen an impact in the overall percent of home birth babies screened (approximately 34% in 2012), those practitioners who are screening have demonstrated significant increases in the screening rates within their midwifery practices. This data will be shared. In addition, the number of days to complete a hearing screen for the home birth population has shown a marked decrease since the equipment has been put in place, from 23 days in 2009 to 5 days in 2013 (preliminary data for 2013). All midwives participating in the collaborative share screening results with the EHDI Program. The midwives are reporting good responsiveness from the families they serve. The group participates in sharing and learning sessions via telephone conferencing hosted and facilitated by the EHDI Program. Tennessee EHDI Program has plans for expansion of this collaborative based on the success of the initiative thus far. Julie Beeler - Primary Presenter Tennessee Newborn Hearing Screening Program      Credentials: MA, CCC-A/SLP, NHS Audiology Consultant      Other Affiliations: DSHPSHWA       Julie Beeler is currently the Audiology Consultant for Tennessee's Newborn Hearing Screening Program at the University of Tennessee Center on Deafness. Previously, she was with the University of Tennessee Department of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology. In addition to her EHDI work, Ms. Beeler also works privately as an educational audiologist and speech-language pathologist for a rural East Tennessee school system.
