Abstract:

Because of advanced hearing technology, children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) have greater access to sound than was available even a decade ago. Because of improved access to sound, there has been increased interest in music perception and enjoyment of children who are DHH and who use cochlear implants or digital hearing aids. Establishing strong foundations of language and literacy during the early childhood years in preparation for kindergarten readiness are consistent with the priorities contained within national reading initiatives and the Common Core standards. This presentation will describe strategies for enhancing phonics, vocabulary, story recall, and other literacy comprehension skills by incorporating music into the preschool literacy curriculum for children who are DHH. Furthermore, this presentation will describe development of materials for parents to use in the home setting to promote and enhance language and literacy development using music.
