Title: 'Off the Page: Bringing Books to Life' Track: 3 - Language Acquisition and Development Keyword(s): literacy, narrative development, A-V Therapy, parent guidance Learning Objectives: identify crucial developmental stages of literacy and narrative development of children birth to 3 utilize at least three new tools to enhance narrative development in children with hearing loss list specific books that correlate with tools to grow literacy and narrative development Abstract: The use of children’s literature has long been an important tool to develop the complex language skills necessary for narrative abilities & conversational competency for children with hearing loss. At Hearts for Hearing, the team has developed tools that are used to coach families in how to “share a book” and extend conversations beyond the pages – beginning with infants and moving through the preschool years. This short course is an intermediate training for professionals who wish to use children’s literature in new and different ways. Classics as well as newly-released books will be shared and video clips will be analyzed for identification of the tools that are used to “grow” conversations. Participants will have the opportunity to practice the tools in small groups. The interaction will be energizing and participants will leave with a wealth of new ideas and opportunities for bringing the stories off the pages into the lives of children and their families. Lindsay Hanna - Author Hearts for Hearing      Credentials: M.S., CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert AVT       Ms. Hanna is a Speech-Language Pathologist and Certified Listening and Spoken Language Specialist (Cert AVT) with Hearts for Hearing in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Lindsay is the lead clinician in Hearts for Hearing's weekly parent-toddler class in addition to providing weekly Listening and Spoken Language therapy services for infants and children. She coordinates an annual summer camp for elementary-age graduates of the program with an emphasis on community involvement and maximizing conversational competency. In addition, Ms. Hanna provides consultation for the team regarding oral motor evaluations and dysphagia. She is the lead teacher in the Hearts for Hearing preschool and provides weekly Listening and Spoken Language therapy services for infants and children. Darcy also serves as Hearts for Hearing's clinical supervisor for SLP graduate students who are participating in short-term practicum experiences.
