Title: 'Reading to Deaf Children: Learning from Deaf Adults'

Learning Objectives:
  1. Participants will watch a clip of a read aloud session and identify the 15 principles in play.
  2. Using a selected book, participants will role play and demonstrate various read aloud principles.

Abstract:

Based on the Reading to Deaf Children: Learning from Deaf Adults manual and DVD, this workshop teaches the effective book-sharing techniques known as 'the 15 Principles for Reading to Deaf Children.' These principles were developed based on research studying effective communication strategies deaf adults use when reading to deaf and hard of hearing children. This workshop is an excellent resource for caregivers and educators of young deaf children and gives individuals the tools and confidence to begin reading aloud to their children right away. The workshop focuses on key concerns: Why is reading important? How do I use sign language to share stories? What if I don't know all the signs related to a story? How do I keep American Sign Language (ASL) and English visible while reading? How do I arrange the placement of the child and the book? Participants learn to recognize and apply the 15 principles for reading to deaf and hard of hearing children. They practice these principles and gain new skills that they can use with their own children or with the children they teach.

     Credentials: Assistant Professor in the American Sign Language and Interpreter Education program at Eastern Kentucky University; Certified trainer for the Reading to Deaf Children: Learning from Deaf Adults workshop.
      Sally Ann Zwicker, Ed.D., is an Assistant Professor in the American Sign Language and Interpreter Education program at Eastern Kentucky University. Prior to this position, Dr. Zwicker was a high school Language Arts teacher for a number of years. As an adjunct instructor, she taught ASL for 14 years to interpreting and Deaf Education majors at the graduate and undergraduate levels as well as at two state colleges. Dr. Zwicker is certified at the Qualified level with the American Sign Language Teachers Association. Dr. Zwicker is also a certified trainer for the Reading to Deaf Children: Learning from Deaf Adults workshop.
