Abstract:

Children with hearing loss are being identified at a very young age which has allowed early interventionists to provide support to parents for an extended period of time through EHDI programs. The combination of support to parents and service to children has had a great impact on the overall progress of those children. At the Moog Center for Deaf Education we are not only monitoring the progress of the children, but we are asking parents to evaluate the progress of their own skills related to supporting their child with hearing loss. Using a questionnaire, adapted from the Scale of Parental Involvement and Self-Efficacy (SPISE) For Young Children with Hearing Loss developed by DesJardin at House Ear Institute, we are tracking parents’ perspectives on their own progress and are better able to address a parent’s strengths and challenges regarding his/her ability to support his/her child. Knowledge of a variety of topics and assessment of a variety of skills are being rated to help professionals provide support to parents to enhance their knowledge and skills. This presentation will address the areas being rated on the questionnaire, as well as, provide suggestions for strategies to support parents in each of these areas. Some of the areas included are: the ability to use activities and strategies at home to help one’s child learn communication skills, the ability to capitalize on daily routines to help one’s child’s develop communication skills, and the ability to explain the child’s hearing loss and the impact of the hearing loss on language development. The full questionnaire will be presented, as well as parent comments related to how early interventionists help parents learn best, and statements from parents about preferred support techniques. This presentation will provide opportunities for participant comments.
