Title: 'The Real Story: First-Hand Experiences with UNHS' Track: 7 - Family Perspectives and Support Keyword(s): Parents, Screening, Support Learning Objectives: ...understand and relate to parents' first hand experiences with NBHS and EHDI. (for participants who are professionals)... be validated or apply alternate strategies in working with families through the NBHS (for other parents) ...be validated and realize they are not alone in their journey raising their deaf or hard of hearing child. Abstract: Since the advent of newborn hearing screenings almost 20 years ago, infants have been identified as DHH earlier and earlier. Conversations about the benefits of early identification and early intervention vs. parent acceptance and opportunities for bonding emerged early on in the professional discourse. Researchers have examined both parent perceptions of the hearing screening and diagnostic processes and provider perceptions of the processes. This parent panel will offer first-hand insights from families who went through the Newborn Hearing Screening Process within the past five years. Five families will share individual stories from the moment they were referred for further testing to their current early intervention services and interactions with their interventionists. Families on the panel represent diverse backgrounds, hearing levels, special needs, and languages used in the home. A moderator will pose questions to the families, summarize themes shared by the families, and connect themes to the research. The panel will also accept questions from the audience. She maintains her Certificate in Clinical Competence from ASHA as a Speech-Language Pathologist. Rachel is the Project Coordinator for Parent Links and the Deaf Education And Families Project at the Family Focus Resource Center at CSUN.
