Abstract:

Learn about the free, online Parent Advocacy Training (P.A.T.) program for families of children who need educational accommodations. The P.A.T. program helps families feel confident about the process of developing an Individualized Education Program (IEP) in partnership with school officials by providing information, skills, and resources. Families will learn the step-by-step process of developing an IEP, get tips on negotiating, and better understand the responsibilities of the school district and their rights. Offered in English or Spanish, with captions in both languages, P.A.T. is an excellent resource for families transitioning to Part B of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and professionals who are members of the IEP team, or assisting families to develop an IEP.

      Judy Harrison is the Interim Executive Director for the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. She is an experienced teacher of the deaf and early interventionist specializing with cochlear implants. She currently represents AG Bell on the Joint Committee on Infant Hearing.

      Corrine Altman is the Co-President of the Alexander Graham Bell Association’s Nevada Chapter and is the mother of five children, the first two of whom were born profoundly deaf. She is a member of AG Bell’s national board of directors and recently served as the Chairperson of the AG Bell 2012 Convention in Scottsdale, Arizona. She is an active advocate in the Clark County School District and in 2001, helped with Assembly Bill 250 and testified before the Nevada Assembly on behalf of early hearing detection. The Newborn Hearing Screening Bill was mandated in the state of Nevada on January 1, 2002. Corrine is the founder of N*Courage*Mint; a parent support and educational program designed for young families who have children with hearing loss. Corrine recently served as the Chair of the 2012 AG Bell Convention in Scottsdale, Arizona.
