Title: 'Foundations in Listening and Spoken Language for Infants and Young Children' Track: 3 - Language Acquisition and Development Keyword(s): Listening, spoken language, literacy, informed choice Learning Objectives: describe the importance of speech perception for developing spoken language. list three strategies families can use to enhance the child's listening environment. list three educational accommodations that are typically in place for children who are deaf or hard of hearing and use listening and spoken language. Abstract: This interactive session is designed to provide early interventionists and parents with a comprehensive overview of elements that promote optimal acquisition of spoken language through listening by infants and young children who are deaf or hard of hearing. The session will give parents and interventionists accurate information about hearing and hearing technology; auditory functioning; spoken language communications; child development; family guidance; strategies for listening and spoken language; and educational issues including the acquisition and advancement of literacy. Attendees who are responsible for helping families make informed choices will find this session a valuable resource in their professional development. Judy Harrison - POC AG Bell      Credentials: M.A.       Judy Harrison is the Interim Executive Director for the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. She is an experienced teacher of the deaf and early interventionist specializing with cochlear implants. AVT      Other Affiliations: College of Wooster, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, & Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing       Donald M. Goldberg is a Professor of Communication at the College of Wooster (Ohio), and a Consultant on the Professional Staff with the Hearing Implant Program at the Cleveland Clinic’s Head and Neck Institute. Dr. Goldberg is the former Executive Director of the Helen Beebe Speech and Hearing Center in Easton, Pennsylvania. Don is a Past President of the AG Bell Academy for Listening and Spoken Language and Past President of AG Bell. Dr. Goldberg completed his master’s degree in speech- language pathology in 1979 and his Ph.D. in auditory rehabilitation in 1985 from the University of Florida. He is dually certified in speech-language pathology and audiology. Dr. Goldberg is also a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist, Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist (LSLS Cert. AVT).
