Title: 'Developing an EHDI Mentoring Relationship'
Track: 1 - EHDI Program Enhancement
Keyword(s): Mentor EHDI Coordinator Professional Development
Learning Objectives:
  1. Participants will actively contribute to a development of a model for an EHDI Mentoring program.

Abstract:

With recent turnover in EHDI programs nationwide there is a cohort of new program administrators that can benefit from a mentoring relationship with seasoned EHDI Directors. Following the 2012 EHDI meeting, the new Delaware EHDI Program Director voiced a need for such a program on the monthly EHDI Chat conference call. The New Jersey EHDI Program Director with more than ten years in the EHDI program, agreed to an informal mentor relationship. Calls were set up on a monthly basis and have proven useful for the new program director. We propose this to be a model program based on the successful AMCHP New Director Mentor Program which serves new Title V directors and MCH/CYSHCN Directors to foster leadership development and programmatic insight. Through formal opportunities to interact at the annual EHDI conference and monthly EHDI Chat Conference calls a forum for networking can be established. In addition regular communications between the new and seasoned directors provide ongoing guidance, resources and support and perspective. Benefits to the new EHDI Director include: greater knowledge of the EHDI Program; access to an insider’s perspective-someone who has been in the position; exposure to diverse perspectives from other states; personal and professional growth as well as expanding your professional network. Benefits to the mentor include: personal and professional growth, satisfaction in contributing to someone’s professional development and the development of an effective EHDI program, sharing valuable knowledge gained from personal experience and engagement in meaningful volunteer opportunities within your field of practice. This working session will seek to match mentors/mentees, suggest a framework for a formal EHDI mentoring process, and explore a model for sustainability of a mentoring program.
