ABSTRACT INFORMATION
Title: 'Meet Successful Deaf Adults: A Panel' Track: 3 - Language Acquisition and Development Keyword(s): future, diversity, self-realization, parents, employment Learning Objectives: Identify important factors in deaf adults' success e.g. type of family support and language approach Deduce common denominators that have paved the way for the panelists' success in employment and beyond. Predict possibilities for the career success of the deaf or hard of hearing child in question Abstract: Do you wonder what a deaf or hard of hearing child will be like as an adult? Will he or she be independent? Will he or she go to college? Will he or she be successful? Those questions are often on minds of parents who have met their first deaf person when they find out their child is deaf or hard of hearing, particularly fathers who tend to be more concerned about long-term planning. (Benedict & Crace, et al., 2012, Naseef, 1997). This presentation is a way to visualize the future, as you will be introduced to a panel of diverse and successful deaf and hard of hearing adults from a variety of educational backgrounds including language and communication approaches. From being a financial planner or lawyer to having an advanced degree ranging from a specialized masters to a Ph.D., each panelist is viewed as extremely successful in his/her respective career along with being a well-respected community leader. Questions posed will range from their early exposure to language and communication approaches to the type of support and actions their parents undertook, along with the specific steps they took to achieve their current career-related and community success. Parents and EHDI professionals will be invited to present their own questions, as well. Tawny Holmes - POC,Co-Presenter National Association of the Deaf      Credentials: M.A. in Family Centered Early Education, J.D. and Esq. J.D. Certification in Early Intervention Leadership       Tawny Holmes is the Education Policy Counsel at the National Association of the Deaf. She graduated from the University of Baltimore School of Law. In addition to her law degree, she has a Master of Arts in Family Centered Early Education. Ms. Holmes has worked three years teaching deaf and hard of hearing students. She is also a godmother of four deaf children.       ASHA DISCLOSURE: Financial - Nonfinancial - Tara Finkle - Co-Presenter Maryland Association of the Deaf      Credentials: M.A. in Deaf Education, Family Educator at the Maryland School for the Deaf       Tara Duboski Finkle is a mother of two adopted elementary-age deaf/hard of hearing children who attend the Maryland School for the Deaf, Frederick campus. She currently serves as a representative on the Universal Newborn Screening Council.
