'The Genome and EHDI- A Fascinating Couple' The rapid advances in genetic testing have influenced almost every aspect of health care. Hearing loss is no exception. New genetic technologies allow for more accurate, more rapid and cheaper methods of searching the genome to identifying the etiology of hearing loss. Using these techniques, an etiology (cause) can now be identified in the majority of case. Identifying an etiology can be helpful in many aspects including simply knwoing 'why', identifying possible complicating medical conditions, defining prognosis, and providing family information. We will discuss the issues concerning genetic testing including how, why / why not, and family directed testing.
