ABSTRACT INFORMATION
Title: 'The Foundation of Every Relationship: The Importance of Caregiver/Infant Bonding' Track: 6-Family Issues Keyword(s): infants, bonding, attachment, caregiver Learning Objectives: explain why caregiver/infant bonding is so vital. They will also leave the workshop equipped with strategies for caregivers to use in bonding with their baby. Abstract: Babies are born. Typically, when a caregiver finds out his/her child is deaf, it immediately creates a barrier because many times, the birth of their child is the first time the caregiver has met a deaf person. A fear of the unknown and almost immediate grief then creates a distance between the caregiver and the child. Without this initial bonding experience, the child- deaf or not, will always struggle in both personal and professional relationships. This workshop will illustrate the importance of bonding and attachment between parent/caregiver and the infant. The parent/caregiver and infant bond shapes the baby’s brain- which then leads to maintaining relationships, expectations of others, and development of self esteem. Strategies in appreciating the whole child and getting past the “DEAF” will be shared along with videos of and ideas for various bonding activities. PRESENTER(S): Jodee Crace - Outreach Services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children      Credentials: M.A.: School Guidance Counseling with Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children      Other Affiliations: NAEYC and American Society for Deaf Children       Jodee has lived as a Deaf person all her life and currently works as an Early Intervention Coordinator with the Outreach Services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children in Indiana. Her roles involve assessment, eligibility determination, home-based family education services, counseling, Deaf Mentoring, presenting with stakeholders, participating in committee meetings, and drafting various position papers in best practices with Early Intervention. Jodee is married to a Deaf man and they have four sons. One of their son's is totally blind and hard of hearing. The rest of the children are Deaf. Madelyn Warnock - Outreach Services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children      Credentials: B.A. Elementary Education (K-6)/Deaf Education (K-12), Lenoir-Rhyne College      Other Affiliations: Indiana Hands & Voices Board Member, National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), and Indiana Association for the Deaf (IAD).       Deaf herself, Madelyn is an Early Intervention Specialist with Outreach Services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children in Indianapolis, Indiana. Her roles include co-facilitating local and regional playgroups statewide, home-based family education services, and Deaf Mentoring. She is currently working on her Master's degree in Early Childhood Education from Indiana University.
