Abstract:

Early Identification and better amplification technology has changed the face of educating children with hearing loss. Early intervention allows families to gain support in providing an early and consistent language model. Research tells us that language access is a critical factor for children with hearing loss to develop both good communication and literacy skills. Signed Exact English II was created as a tool to improve literacy skills in school age children in the time before early detection and intervention. As more families are early identified, there is an opportunity to provide a child with hearing loss access to their family’s language, prior to entering school. SEE II is one tool for doing this. This presentation will address myths and misconceptions of SEE II, discuss facts and research regarding SEE II and demonstrate and clarify the components of one successful model for early intervention. The history of SEE II, the strengths and challenges of using this approach, and practices of a strong SEE II model will be presented. Participants will hear family statements regarding SEE II, and view the outcomes for families. Action steps will be identified to enable programs or providers to clarify their practice, receive further training and information, and support families who are interested in exploring SEE II as a tool.
