Title: 'Closing the Gap: Working With Spanish Speaking Families ' Track: 3-Early Intervention and Beyond Keyword(s): cultural competency Learning Objectives: 1)have a deeper understanding of Spanish Speaking Populations 2)will be able to Identify key factors when working with Spanish Speaking populations 3)understand the importance of cultural competence and cultural sensitivity 4) recognize Stereotypes/ ethnocentrism / Biases. 5) How to use an interpreter or cultural broker in a parent session and when administering assessments 5)Recognize a family’s cultural strengths and needs Abstract: Early childhood special education programs are struggling to meet the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse populations because of language barriers, a lack of understanding of cultural differences and the misguided view of cultural differences as deficits. Durán (2009). This presentation hopes to provide professionals with the tools and the cultural knowledge to improve service delivery to cultural diverse families in particular to Latino families. Working with babies, toddlers, and their families to help ensure children with hearing loss are ready for school, reading, and life is a joy! Lucia Quinonez Sumner - EICDHH      Credentials: Parent-Infant Educator B.A. Psychology, M.A.Special Education       Lucia was already a teacher of young children when she came to the US from Ecuador. Holds a masters degree in Special education and currently works as Parent Infant educator for the North Carolina Early Intervention for Children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
