ABSTRACT INFORMATION
Title: 'Parent Hearing Aid Experiences' Track: 2-Audiological Assessment and Intervention Keyword(s): Hearing aid, Parents, Pediatric Learning Objectives: 1. Understand the challenges parents experience in obtaining hearing aids. 2. Understand the challenges parents experience in managing hearing aid use. Abstract: Children born with permanent hearing loss have the opportunity to receive needed services earlier as a result of newborn hearing screening (NHS). Even though the average age of hearing loss diagnosis and hearing aid fitting has decreased as a result of NHS, achieving the benchmark of hearing aid fitting within one month of diagnosis is challenging. Because hearing aid fitting is an important first step to the intervention and management process, and effective ongoing management of the technology is critical for optimal outcomes, a survey was sent to parents to learn about their experiences to better understand the challenges they encountered. The surveys were distributed through national parent support organizations, Hands & Voices, American Society for Deaf Children, and the Alexander Graham Bell Association, from February through May 2011. Three hundred and fifty surveys were returned. Results will be discussed. PRESENTER(S): Karen Munoz - Utah State University      Credentials: Associate Professor      Other Affiliations: NCHAM       Karen Muñoz is an associate professor of audiology at Utah State University in the Department of Communicative Disorders and associate director of the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management. Her research focus is in the area of childhood hearing loss. Janet DesGeorges - Hands & Voices, Headquarters      Credentials: N/A       Janet DesGeorges lives in Boulder, Colorado and is mom to Sara, who is hard of hearing. She is a co-founder of Hands & Voices, serving as the Executive Director since September 2011, and as the E.D. of the Flagship chapter of Hands & Voices in Colorado for 10 years prior to that. Ms. DesGeorges is the author on the chapter for Family Support in the NCHAM e-Book, the co-author of the book Educational Advocacy for Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing: The Hands & Voices Guidebook, and many other publications. Ms. DesGeorges received a program certificate from the MCH Public Health Leadership Institute in 2011 at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. Her areas of interest include Leadership Development for parents; Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Systems; Parent/Professional partnerships in Quality Improvement processes. Karianne Barwick - Utah State University      Credentials: B.S.       Karianne Barwick is a graduate student in the doctor of audiology program at Utah State University. She is also completing the Listening and Spoken Language emphasis in pediatric audiology. Kristina Blaiser - Idaho State University      Credentials: Ph.D., CCC-SLP       Kristina Blaiser, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is an assistant professor of Speech-Language Pathology in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Idaho State University-Meridian. Dr. Blaiser has extensive experience leading early childhood education programs and evaluating the outcomes of children who are Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing. Her research interests include program evaluation and graduate training related to assessment and early intervention practices of children who are Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing. Dr. Blaiser’s recent work has focused on using telehealth to support families in early intervention. Kristina is the Program Development Manager for ASHA SIG 9: Hearing Loss and Hearing Disorders in Childhood, has served as a consultant for the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management (NCHAM), and is Vice President for the OPTION Schools network.   AUTHOR(S):
