Abstract:

In partnership with the EAR Foundation of Arizona the Office of Newborn Screening developed a comprehensive education plan. One of the components of this plan was the development of a Professional materials packet. The packet pairs bloodspot and hearing information. Contained within this packet are materials for the provider and for families, descriptive educational sheets such as NBS essentials and dispelling myths we developed to highlight/address community and professional concerns regarding Newborn Screening. Along with development of the packet, the education plan includes two successful strategies. The first strategy was to conduct site visits with birthing hospitals, audiology practices, community health centers, private laboratories, and midwifery practices using the education packet. The second strategy was to enhance the working relationship and increase visibility with our partners who serve the professionals connected to NBS; Arizona Perinatal Trust, Arizona chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Neonatal Nursing associations.
