ABSTRACT INFORMATION
Title: 'Hospital Training Boot Camp' Track: 5-Follow-up, Tracking, and Data Management Keyword(s): EHDI, in-service, hospital, training, loss to followu-up/loss to documentation Learning Objectives: 1) Learn effectiveness of presentation methods from Oklahoma's successful hospital trainings 2) Learn examples from Oklahoma's presentations and hospital packets that can be modified for any state 3) Learn from other states how they have been able to reduce their LTF/LTD Abstract: As seen in the 2009 Diagnosis and Loss to Follow-up (LTF)/Loss to Documentation (LTD) Summary by CDC, Oklahoma now has the fifth lowest LTF/LTD rates in the nation at 10.8%. This is a significant improvement from previous LTF/LTD of 40% in past years. How did we do it? The Oklahoma EHDI Program has launched an attack on LTF/LTD to ensure that all babies are receiving initial screening as well as appropriate and timely follow-up. Many reasons have contributed to our success improving LTF/LTD including implementing an improved data management system, incorporating a Follow-up/Audiology Coordinator, and adding a Quality Assurance/Data Coordinator. The most crucial activity that has increased our success is mastering hospital trainings that have proven to be one of the best tools for statewide impact. Experience has shown that content is important but knowing how to convey the message is also vital. This breakout presentation will provide techniques for successful hospital training. Participants will learn: • What information to present • How to prepare for the trenches • How to be purposeful in the approach • How to capture your audience • How to get buy-in from the hospital staff • How to make a lasting impression • How to balance “information” vs. “feeling” During this presentation, participants (AKA soldiers) will be pushed to their limits to discover strategies about rethinking their role in hospital trainings. This includes intense preparation, immense dedication, and structured routines to get you in shape to head into the trenches for combat against LTF/LTD. Participants will also receive motivation to continue efforts for improvement and develop comradery with other states in this epic battle. Examples of presentations and hospital packets will be presented so EHDI programs can make modifications of these products for their state. SPEAKER INFORMATION
PRESENTER(S): Patricia Burk - Oklahoma State Department of Health      Credentials: M.S., CCC-SLP, LSLSL Cert. AVT       Patricia Burk is the EHDI Coordinator for the Newborn Hearing Screening Program at the Oklahoma State Department of Health. She is responsible for the day-to-day operation of program and coordinates all of the county health department's audiology services. Patricia has experience as a Speech-Language Pathologist working with children and adults who have hearing loss at renowned cochlear implant clinic. She is a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist, Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist. She received her graduate training from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Patricia serves on the boards of the Oklahoma Speech-Language Hearing Association (OSHA) and the Directors of Speech and Hearing Programs in State Health and Welfare Agencies (DSHPSHWA). She has also participated on the Joint Committee on Infant Hearing, Family Involvement Subcommittee.   AUTHOR(S):
