Title: 'From Parents to Primary Care: The Development & Evaluation of Multidimensional EHDI Education'
Track: 1-EHDI Program Enhancement
Keyword(s): education, data, quality improvement, evaluation
Learning Objectives: 1.Examine the effectiveness of multidimensional EHDI education for parents and professionals including hospital and public health nurses, primary care providers, and specialists. 2.Promote the use of data to drive education planning and evaluation of educational approaches used by EHDI programs.

Abstract:

Despite clear evidence of improved outcomes with early identification and intervention, delays and loss to follow-up continue in all stages of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention programs: from initial screen, to referral to audiologists for a definitive diagnosis, to linkages with early intervention. Work to eliminate redundancies and gaps for follow-up has demonstrated that responsibility for follow up at each stage of the EHDI process is often unclear. Education for parents and professionals regarding the importance of early identification and intervention, clear expectations, division of roles and responsibilities, and the identification of common goals with a shared purpose is essential. Multidimensional education encompassing several types of media (e-newsletters, webinar, print, presentations) for a variety of stakeholders is powerful tool. Employing EHDI education is a rewarding, but complex and challenging task. The use of new and stimulating formats for education can be exciting, however without the use of data for planning and evaluation of educational formats, the knowledge gained soon becomes the knowledge forgotten. This presentation will highlight various multidimensional educational tools used for EHDI stakeholders including hospital and local public health nurses, primary care providers, audiologists, families, and specialists. Data used to assist in planning and evaluation of educational efforts will be highlighted.
