Abstract:

Parents as Teachers is the trusted resource providing a proven home visiting model for the most respected organizations and professionals who serve the evolving needs of families. Our work with the professional community helps young children grow up healthy, safe and ready to learn. Our internationally recognized network of organizations and professionals supports hundreds of thousands of families in all 50 states as well as many other countries through a proven parent education model featuring intimate, in-home visits with parents and children. One of the four Parents as Teachers model components is early detection of developmental and health concerns through screening. In the past, hearing screening was performed with noise makers or the ‘hear kit.’ In January 2011, Parents as Teachers published new essential requirements requiring affiliates to use otoacoustic emissions to screen hearing. The change has been a slow process and came about gradually over the course of six years. In the program year 2006-2007, a pilot project funded by the Missouri Foundation for Health with training support from two audiologists demonstrated the effectiveness of using OAE screening vs. the hear kit. Slightly more that two percent of the 1,195 children screened in this project were referred for medical follow-up. Two children were eventually diagnosed with hearing loss. With the success of the pilot, the Parents as Teachers national office has been promoting the use of OAE technology through media and conferences. Support from Dr. Will Eiserman and his team with the ECHO project has propelled this effort forward. Now Parents as Teachers affiliates are looking for collaborators in this important work. Affiliates will be seeking funding to purchase and maintain the equipment and sources for training. How can you play a role? Please come to this session and share your thoughts.
