Learning Objectives: Identify topics and/or questions where pediatric audiologists struggled in their pre-test knowledge. Recognize the advantages of measuring learning objectives through a pre- and post-test format. Generally categorize the knowledge of pediatric audiology among the degree types.

Abstract:

The title “pediatric audiologist” is a self-awarded designation defined more by the possessor than by current standards or guidelines. In California, the state audiology consultants were becoming more aware not only of the discrepancies in services offered by pediatric audiologists, but also in test protocols, interpretation, and treatment for infants identified with hearing loss. As part of a grant-funded Infant Audiology Symposium, attendees were given a pre- and post conference tests to measure their knowledge regarding the California Newborn Hearing Screening Program, the Part C early intervention program, California regulations defining ethical dilemmas, Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder and evaluation in infants, current Joint Committee on Infant Hearing diagnostic and treatment recommendations, and appropriate cochlear implant referrals. All questions were submitted by the presenters for a total of 25 multiple choice questions. Additionally, participants were requested to rate their overall knowledge and experience in pediatric audiology before and after the symposium, and share their years of experience, degree, and where the degree was earned (in California, outside of California, or online). Interestingly, 31 of the 74 participants rated themselves with a high score in pediatric knowledge, but a passing score on the pretest was only achieved by 21 of the total participants. The breakdown of results, experience, and specific questions on the pre- and post tests will be shared, as well as what EHDI programs can do with this type of knowledge.
