Abstract:

Information about hearing aids on the Internet can be overwhelming. A simple Google search results in over five million hits! According to Kochkin (2007) hearing aid adoption has increased slightly over the past several years, in part due to online hearing aid sales. A growing concern about the effectiveness of online dispensing has increased due to the surge in online sales. While some Internet sites are informational only, others allow consumers to purchase hearing aids directly online without any professional advice or visits. Kimball, et. al. (2008, 2009) conducted a series of studies to investigate the process of online hearing aid dispensing. The studies included online hearing tests, handmade earmold impressions and the actual online purchasing process. The outcomes of these studies suggest that purchasing hearing aids online can be misleading and/or potentially dangerous to consumers. The purpose of this session is to help consumers navigate the world of online hearing aid information and purchasing. This would include adults or clients that are considering an online purchase or parents that may be considering purchasing a hearing aid online for their child, all for the purpose of saving time and money. Participants will learn what online services are available for hearing aid purchases and which should be avoided. Participants will also learn how loosely online hearing aid sales are regulated. Participants will be given data regarding the current online hearing aid dispensing research that is being conducted at our facility.
