Learning Objectives: The learner will explore how closely the existing communities of family and faith can have a powerful influence on a family with a child who has been diagnosed with a hearing loss regardless of the degree. This influence can inform and influence family’s experiences of support beginning with diagnosis, through decisions about technology, communication choices, educational options and parenting.

Abstract:

We will explore briefly various belief systems approach to disability, however we will focus on the experiences of families who have gone before and how faith has informed and supported their family process as well as ways in which their faith and faith community may have failed to support them. This approach will help EHDI systems to be aware of these influences and honor them and not disregard or diminish the importance of faith and faith communities as families seek support. In the fine tradition of Hands & Voices, learners will be encouraged to understand their own perspective and possible biases about faith and faith communities. These biases can directly or indirectly influence the kind of support that is offered. Learners will be encouraged to contemplate how their own beliefs about faith may dishonor a family’s faith system and its influence on them as they seek the unique kind of support they will need in building their family in light of a member being diagnosed with a hearing loss.
