Abstract: |
Due to the success of the EDHI program in Colorado, more and more families with newborns are identified and meeting the 1-3-3 goal (one month- outpatient hearing screening; 3 month – evaluation by pediatric audiologist; 3 month – enrollment in early intervention/hearing aid fitting). To ensure appropriate parent education and support for these newly identified infants, the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind has developed the “Early Years Program”. This program provides a place for families to come together to build relationships with other families, adults who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing, and professionals who work in Colorado. The goal of Early Years is to empower parents to make informed decisions about their child with hearing loss through education, emotional support and comprehensive unbiased information. The Early Years Program is essential for families just beginning the journey with their baby who has hearing loss and continues to be a support for families and children through age five. At the heart of the Early Years Program is early literacy development. Each Early Years event focuses on a specific story with activities supporting the theme. Connections to adult deaf/hard of hearing role models are an integral component of each event, allowing families to form these important relationships. All aspects of communication, including auditory, sign language and spoken language, are integrated into the parent-child activities. Music is an essential focus of each event. Parent education is on-going process. Speaker topics have included the development of the Theory of Mind; audiological testing (including P1); Positive Behavior Support education; social/emotional development; and sign language development. Parent support has also been a critical component in the development of friendships among families and as a means for imparting experiences and knowledge. The development of the Early Years Program has been an indispensable resource for families. |
