Title: 'Without Borders: Using Tele-therapy to Expand Access' Track: 3-Early Intervention and Beyond Audience: Primary Audience: State Education Agency Secondary Audience: Non-Profit Agency Tertiary Audeince: Advocacy Group Keyword(s): early intervention, tele-therapy, protocols Learning Objectives: Develop protocols for teletherapy programs Assess the value of teletherapy for your agency or region Abstract: Each state EDHI Program seeks to provide every family with early diagnosis, amplification and qualified providers to meet their early intervention needs. Around the country we are faced with a shortage of qualified providers, especially in the area of aural habilitation. Internet-based service delivery offers the promise of extending limited resources to serve families in rural or underserved areas. St. Joseph Institute has been working with First Steps programs in Indiana and Missouri to develop tele-therapy services; therapy sessions delivered by a Listening and Spoken Language specialist or SLP to families in their home via broadband internet connections with the use of webcams. This presentation will examine the advantages and issues of establishing a tele-therapy program, offer considerations for state protocols, and give examples of effective service delivery. Teri has degrees in Deaf Education from Eastern Michigan University and in Early Childhood Education of the Handicapped from the University of Kentucky. She has taught auditory/oral programming for infants through middle school students in home-based early intervention as well as private and public school settings. Cindy Costello - St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf       Cindy Costello is the Chief Operation Officer of St Joseph Institute for the Deaf. She has 20 years in NFP management, is experienced in grant writing, program development and strategic planning and implementation.
