Abstract:

In today’s technology driven culture, where many of us within EHDI are struggling to get and stay connected, the digital generation is navigating the technology highway texting, tweeting, and creating social networks as a means of learning about their world. If only we could tap into that driving force—energy in motion where everyone knows the same thing at precisely the same time. Real time web based solutions are one avenue; they are ubiquitous, can include role-based security, are uncomplicated, and in most cases—free. Arizona, like most states, is experiencing unprecedented cut backs. Being creative, “doing more with less” is the new mantra. We have found some creative strategies to reduce loss to follow up and improve efficiency connecting EHDI partners within a shared web based portal. Imagine: no more trying to track down diagnostic reports, delays in treatment decisions attempting to find inpatient hearing screening results, or playing phone tag with a doctor’s office. Having the ability to create a site to share confirmed case reports and collaborate on projects, where important news is just a click away, and current journal articles are at your fingertips—real-time. All of this in a secure role based web environment that can be accessed from anywhere. And why not create a network of online friends where parents or providers can ask and get answers to typical EHDI questions? Our group will demonstrate that by using widely available web based tools for collaboration, EHDI processes can be streamlined. And, by employing non-traditional web platforms to reach many generations, each with individualized communication preferences, navigating the information highway is a breeze.
