Title: 'It Takes a State to Create Best Practice Guidelines' Track: 1-EHDI Program Enhancement Audience: Primary Audience: State Health Department Secondary Audience: Audiologist Tertiary Audeince: Medical Provider Keyword(s): Pediatric, Audiology, Diagnostic Center, Lost to Follow Up Learning Objectives: 1.Discuss available best practice guidelines for pediatric audiology at state and national levels. 2. Consider how the state demographics and other variables may influence criteria to designate pediatric diagnostic centers in their states. 3.Apply use of large focus groups to provide feedback and input to state level guidelines. Abstract: The Michigan EHDI program first established a list of rescreen and diagnostic centers for statewide use in 2003. At that time, the list was derived from survey responses which focused primarily on the types of equipment (ABR, OAE) available in each setting. As the Michigan EHDI advisory board considered options to reduce loss to follow up, it was recommended that the diagnostic center list be updated. In addition to aesthetic changes, the board suggested that inclusion criteria be expanded beyond equipment. During this presentation, the process to generate the final guidelines will be discussed from the initial investigation of available national resources to a half-day focus group in which audiologists from across the state provided input and feedback on specific elements of the guidelines. The challenges of meeting the diverse geographic and demographic aspects of the state will be summarized through the review of an exit survey. Presentation(s): Not Available Handouts: Not Available

Mott Childrens Hospital within the University of Michigan Medical Center. In addition to completing hearing assessments of children, she has been a team member of the Sound Support Program which provides outreach and support services to families of children who are deaf/hard of hearing. Michelle Garcia - MDCH/EHDI      Credentials: Au.D.       Michelle Garcia is a licensed audiologist. She obtained her doctorate of audiology from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry and has experience as a clinical audiologist and expertise in newborn hearing screening as follow-up consultant for the Michigan EHDI program.
