ABSTRACT INFORMATION
Title: 'Medical Diagnoses Driven by UNHS' Track: 2-Audiological Assessment and Intervention Audience: Primary Audience: Audiologist Secondary Audience: Medical Provider Tertiary Audeince: Keyword(s): medical work-up, comorbidities, hearing loss Learning Objectives: 1)Identify at least 3 medical conditions that may present with hearing loss as the initial finding 2) Analyze hearing evaluation results to determine the need for evaluation by other specialties to ensure patients receive timely diagnosis of associated or comorbid issues 3) Describe the impact of additional diagnoses on the treatment planning for hearing loss Abstract: The implementation of universal newborn screening has allowed for the diagnosis of permanent hearing loss in early infancy. As a consequence, the medical workup for congenital hearing loss has created the opportunity for early diagnosis of serious and complex medical issues that might otherwise go undetected for long periods of time. The early diagnosis of these conditions allows the family to make informed decisions regarding treatment and monitoring, and in some cases may significantly impact the decisions regarding the habilitation of hearing loss and use of various communication modes. This presentation will describe 5 cases where the diagnosis of a medical condition was made following the diagnostic hearing evaluation through the use of imaging, genetic testing, blood work or electrophysiologic measures such as EKG. The need for close collaboration between the family, audiologist, otolaryngologist and other specialty providers will be highlighted. Presentation(s): Not Available Handouts: Not Available

PRESENTER(S): Cheryl Edwards - Children's Hospital Boston at Waltham      Credentials: AuD       Cheryl Edwards, AuD is the Audiology Site Manager at Children’s Hospital Boston at Waltham. She has presented nationally on such topics as newborn hearing screening, early diagnosis and intervention for hearing loss, the medical home, amplification systems and audiological diagnosis. She has taught at both the undergraduate and graduate levels at the University of Rhode Island and recently completed her AuD through Salus University. Marilyn Neault - Children's Hospital Boston      Credentials: PhD, CCC-A, Board Certified in Audiology      Other Affiliations: Harvard Medical School       Marilyn Neault, PhD is the Director of Habilitative Audiology at Children’s Hospital Boston and Assistant Professor of Otology and Laryngology at Harvard Medical School. She coordinates the audiology services for the Cochlear Implant Program at Children’s Hospital Boston. Marilyn has been working in pediatric audiology for over 30 years. She chairs the Cochlear Implant Specialty Certification Committee for the American Board of Audiology, and serves on the Pediatric Assessment Committee of the American Academy of Audiology. Her primary interest areas are cochlear implants and auditory neuropathy. Laura Wheaton - Children's Hospital Boston      Credentials: ScD       Laura Wheaton, ScD. is a staff audiologist at Children's Hospital Boston where she completes behavioral and physiological hearing evaluations on children of all ages and developmental levels. She is a graduate of Montclair State University and completed her clinical externship at Children's Hospital Boston.
