Participants will be able to list key components to an EI training program for providers working with children with hearing loss 2. Participants will be able to quote costs associated with the described program 3. Participants will be able to design an effective EI program for their local area or state Abstract: The Moog Center for Deaf Education has implemented a training/education program for Early Interventionists working with children ages 0-3. The focus of this training is on listening and spoken language, however most components of this program could also be applied to other modes of communication. Professionals interested in such a program include speech language pathologists, developmental therapists, teachers of the deaf and/or audiologists. The purpose of this project is to train early interventionists in order to allow more children and their families to have access to spoken language instruction while receiving EI services and to improve the quality of EI services to children with hearing loss. In 2007-2008 we provided a 7-day program and in early 2010 we will be providing a 9-day program. This presentation will include a description of participants, a schedule/agenda, ideas for follow-up and participant comments. Following are components of the program to be described: 1) Overview of opportunities and possibilities for children with hearing loss, 2)Audiology and its impact on development of spoken language skills for children with hearing loss, 3) Building spoken language skills on sign language skills, 4) Assistive technology, how it works and what to do when it doesn’t, 5) Discussion, live demonstration and videos of teaching strategies with children and parents, 6) Hands-on experience working with children. In addition, a member of the workshop faculty will observe and give support and feedback to each participant working with children on his/her caseload. The workshop series includes a 5-day workshop from Monday through Friday, followed a month later by a two-day session, a mentoring on-site visit within 8 weeks for each participant and then a two-day “wrap-up” approximately six months later. A complete description of the state-wide program, including phone conference follow-ups and the two-day “wrap-up” session will be included in this presentation. AVEd      Other Affiliations: AG Bell       Betsy Moog Brooks is the Executive Director of the Moog Center for Deaf Education. She received her Masters degree in Speech and Hearing from Washington University and is certified in Deaf Education, Behavior Disorders, Learning Disabilities, Early Childhood Education and is a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist. She has been has been in the field of early intervention for more than 30 years. She created a Toddler Curriculum and a Language Curriculum which are used in all Certified Moog Programs. Betsy is the author of the book, My Baby and Me: A Book About Teaching Your Child to Talk. She has lectured throughout the US, South America, and Europe. Betsy continues to provide direct child service and parent support to families with children birth to three. In addition, she is currently pursuing her Educational Doctorate with an emphasis in Andragogy, the study of adult learners.   AUTHOR(S):
