Attendees will be able to better understand the perspectives of fathers who have children with hearing loss, professionals will learn to include and engage fathers in the therapeutic planning process, parents (mothers) will be able to better understand the father's perspective and implement suggestions in their own homes, and all attendees will learn that a father's role is just as important in the process of raising a child with hearing loss. |
Abstract: |
Meet fathers of children with hearing loss from diverse backgrounds who use various approaches of communicating with their children. So frequently the fathers are left-out of decision making, or are absent during therapy sessions and IEPs. But, we all know how important it is for fathers to become experts in hearing loss. This panel will share their feelings and experiences during the different stages of raising their children including their perspectives on your programs, including them in the process, and what they need to feel supported. Not to be missed, we can all learn something from the fathers. |

Ms. Aguilar is the Director of the Chicago Hearing Society, a division of Anixter Center, that provides social services and advocacy, youth programing and mentoring, a hearing health clinic and interpreter referral service throughout Illinois. CHS houses the CHOICES for Parents Coalition and Guide By Your Side program in Illinois. Ms. Aguilar's past work includes creating a center based early intervention program for families and providing developmental therapy, service coordination and family support. Ms. Aguilar has a Masters of Jurisprudence in Health Law from Loyola University Chicago School of Law and has trained the legal community on the rights of persons who are deaf or hard of hearing, and educated the Deaf Community about their rights under state and federal laws. Ms. Aguilar has been signing since childhood and is a nationally-certified state-licensed sign language interpreter. |
