TeleHealth Meeting

It has been suggested that TeleHealth techniques and equipment might provide a cost-effective mechanism for audiology and/or early intervention services to be provided to children identified in EHDI programs. This workshop will highlight the work underway in 10 states regarding the exploration and development of TeleHealth activities as a part of their EHDI grants from the Maternal and Child Health Bureau.

The pre-session workshop will combine didactic presentations with an interactive format and time for dialogue. Representatives from states represented will describe goals, objectives, and plans related to TeleHealth activities and discuss opportunities for synergy and shared activities with other states that are pursuing TeleHealth initiatives. Conference participants not currently involved in TeleHealth activities are invited to attend and participate in the workshop.

9:00 AM view presentation	Tim Patterson, Canada International Scientific Exchange Program, University of Toronto Using examples of TeleHealth services being delivered in rural and remote areas around the world, this presentation will motivate people about the potential while at the same time helping them understand that there are obstacles and challenges that require lots of work ---but which are solvable. Mr. Patterson will be talking from Toronto and will interact with the audience using 2-way videoconferencing equipment.
10:00 AM view presentation	Neil Scharpe, Minot State University Minot State University has a contract with MCHB to develop guidelines, protocols, and tools that can be used by EHDI programs to implement Tele-audiology. This presentation will describe what has been accomplished so far and use live 2-way video-conferencing equipment to conduct audiological testing at a remote site

10:45	Todd Houston: Utah State University Over the past 8 months, the USU team has been delivering early intervention services to deaf children using 2-way video-conferencing equipment. In addition to summarizing the methods and accomplishments, Dr. Houston will use the tele-intervention equipment to link one of the families in from Utah to discuss their experience
11:30 AM view presentation	Kathleen Watts and and Gloria Jones, North Carolina EHDI program North Carolina is just beginning to use Tele-audiology to provide diagnostic services to children in rural parts of the state. The presentation will describe the start-up process and planned activities over the next year.

1:00 PM view presentation	Sandra Gabbard, University of Colorado Colorado is also exploring the use of Tele-audiology and this presentation will describe what has been accomplished so far and plans for the future.
1:30 PM view presentation	Dena Puskin: Director, Office for the Advancement of Telehealth, HRSA Dr. Puskin will discuss policy issues related to the implementation of Telehealth services.
2:15 PM	SWOT Analysis Using the information presented in the workshop, participants will divide into groups of 8-10 people to do a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) Analysis of telehealth for EHDI programs in their area.

3:45 PM view presentation	Catherine Britain: Northwest Regional Telehealth Resource Center This center is one of a network of five regional centers and one national center funded by HRSA to help state maternal and child health programs use Telehealth activities to provide more effective services. The presentation describe the various types of resources which are offered by this network and other groups that would be useful for state EHDI programs
