Improving Communication between State EHDI Programs and Hospitals: Strategies, Barriers, and Benefits

Effective communication between state EHDI programs and hospitals is crucial for ensuring the timely identification and intervention of hearing loss in infants. This presentation aims to delve into the realm of state EHDI programs and hospitals, shedding light on strategies to fortify their communication, pinpointing the barriers that often obstruct it, and explaining the benefits that stem from consistent interaction. By the end of this presentation, participants will be armed with practical strategies and insights, they will be better equipped to overcome communication barriers, thereby contributing to the overall success of state EHDI programs and, most importantly, the well-being of babies with hearing loss and their families.

Ashten Yost (Primary Presenter), Mississippi State Department of Health, Ashten.Yost@msdh.ms.gov;
Dr. Ashten C. Yost is the Mississippi EHDI Director. She holds a BA in Speech and Hearing Sciences, MS in Oral Deaf Education, an EdD from The University of Southern Mississippi, and a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist (AVEd) Certification. She recently worked as a Professional Development Coordinator for the University of Mississippi and the Mississippi Department of Education. Previously, she worked as an Early Oral Interventionist and Listening and Spoken Language Specialist (LSLS) at Magnolia Speech School, a Cochlear Implant Consumer Specialist for Advanced Bionics, LLC, and a Teacher of the Deaf at Mama Lere Hearing School at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
