A Critical Time for Language: What Families of Deaf Infants Wish They Had Known

A Critical Time for Language: What Families of Deaf Infants Wish They Had Known The presentation covers a research project focused on families's experience with the EHDI system. Upon looking back on their EHDI journey, families shared what they wish they were told when they first learned their child is deaf. While the studies cannot be generalized to all families with a deaf child, the important finding from this study is that almost all families with deaf children started out either with very little or no information about early language opportunities. The research includes a survey inquiring families' experience from the time they made the initial contact with the medical provider to present time. In addition to the survey, the research include interviews with parents of young deaf children age six and younger with different hearing levels. The findings are organize around three areas of of focus: 1) Identified who provided initial information to the families and their level of satisfaction with the information and resources they received. 2) Families' level of satisfaction specific to their decision making regarding their child's language acquisition and communication. 3) The research summarizes families' reflection on the following: a) resources that they wished they were provided earlier; b) how knowing more about language resources earlier would have impacted their child's language development and education, and c) what the family's journey could have been.

  • Learn about the factors that influenced families' EHDI experience.
  • Consider how professionals can develop supportive approaches during early identification.
  • Incorporate strategies to enhance language development.
