Introduction to Cued American English From a Native Cuer's Perspective
Participants taking this workshop will learn about Cued Speech (Cued American English) from the perspective of a Deaf native cuer. Learn the history of cueing, common misconceptions about cueing, how cueing links to literacy achievements, and the basics of how to cue!
- Participants will be able to explain what Cued American English is and why it was developed.
- Participants will be able to demonstrate the principles of Cued American English.
- Participants will be able to cue phonemes (sounds) and basic words.

Hilary Franklin is a Deaf native cuer and proficient signer who currently works for the Department of Defense. She grew up attending Montgomery County, MD, public schools, home to a three-track deaf and hard-of-hearing program that included cueing and received educational access through the use of cued language transliterators (CLTs). She earned her B.A. in Public Policy Analysis from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her M.A. in Teaching American Sign Language as a Foreign Language from Teachers College (Columbia University). In 2005, Hilary became the first Deaf certified instructor of Cued American English, and currently serves on the NCSA Board of Directors.
