A "Radical" Shift to Balance in Deaf Education
Dr. Maiorana-Basas will present a brief review on how the history of deaf education has shaped our professional bias on language and communication options and how that bias impacts professional practice. The topics and discussion will focus on parents, deaf community, professional community and strategies for better communication between and across groups. Participants will learn specific strategies for having more productive discussion and collaboration between and across perceived polarized groups (LSL professionals v. Bilingual Specialists, or Parents v. Deaf Community, for example) and how to "move forward" with The Radical Middle.
- Participants discover opportunities to collaborate and connect with professionals including members of the deaf community and parent organizations, representing diverse perspectives.
- Participants will explore how “radically middle thinking” can inform professional practice and development.

Michella Maiorana-Basas (she/her/hers)- is an Associate Professor and the Director of the Undergraduate Program in Deaf Education at Flagler College in Saint Augustine, FL. While her professional practice and expertise is grounded in the bilingual/bicultural model, she understands the importance of supporting the diversity within the D/deaf communities and believes it is critical that teacher preparation programs provide philosophical balance to the greatest degree possible. In order to move forward in the field, she believes that we must find the common threads that connect families, deaf individuals, and professionals across all modality preferences and philosophical approaches.
Michella currently serves as a co-editor for Raising and Educating Deaf Children, Foundations for Policy, Practice, and Outcomes and has dedicated her study and service to strengthening the research-to-practice pipeline while building philosophical and collaborative bridges in deaf education.
Michella lives on a small family farm with her husband, a VERY energetic 4 year old, six hens, a rooster, a budding little fish tank, and her beloved holland lop.
