Prematurity and the Occurrence of Central Auditory Processing Disorder
There is evidence of an increased risk for children born pre-term to develop sensory issues compared to their full-term counterparts. The literature points to auditory and vestibular issues ranking high on the list of affected sensory processes. Auditory issues appear to manifest in the form of Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) which can occur even when peripheral hearing is within the normal range. CAPD is characterized as having difficulty processing auditory information via the auditory central nervous system. A person with CAPD will have difficulties in one or more areas of listening including localization and lateralization of sound, auditory discrimination, auditory pattern recognition, temporal aspects of sound, deciphering competing acoustic signals and understanding speech in the presence of competing environmental noise. The need for audiologists to track these children is high, as undiagnosed APD can lead to learning and communication difficulties. CAPD children are often identified when they start to experience academic difficulties, especially when the language and environmental demands become more challenging. Struggling with academics can lead to self-esteem issues, mental health problems and affect social relationships, including those with friends and family. In children with a history of prematurity, screening for APD at an appropriate age can help identify if deficits are present early on and allow for swift intervention.
