Identifying which infants in NYS are not diagnosed after failing hearing screening
NYS staff have worked with EHDI coordinators at hospitals statewide to increase the percent of infants who receive a hearing diagnosis after failing their screening, but it has been difficult to maintain progress. The rate was 37.5% in 2016, 43.5% in 2017, 38.0% in 2018 and 30.29% according to preliminary 2019 data. In order to gain a greater understanding of this issue, we will examine whether infants’ race, ethnicity and geographic location (NYC versus rest of NY state) significantly predict which infants are not diagnosed after failing the screening. If geographic location significantly predicts the percent of infants diagnosed, we will examine location in greater detail to identify which counties have lower percentages of infants diagnosed after failing their screening. This program evaluation will help NYS identify which infants in which locations may be less likely to be diagnosed and to develop Quality Improvement efforts to address this problem. It can also provide a template for other states who are interested in examining how disparities may impact the care infants receive within their EHDI program.
