Installing Infant Mental Health Into a State EHDI System
The JCIH 2019 Position Statement recognizes that some families may benefit from infant mental health supports. Infant mental health is a field of research and practice that focuses on optimizing social, emotional, behavioral, and cognitive development of infants in the context of the emerging relationships between parents and infants. WI is the only state where the EHDI Director is both an audiologist and an endorsed Infant Mental Health Specialist. Come to this session to learn ways that state EHDI programs can embed Infant Mental Health principles and practices into the EHDI system of care. Infant mental health is important to family and staff well-being in the EHDI system at any time but especially during times of intense stress. 2020 has been an especially stressful time.
- Participants will be able to name key principles and practices of Infant Mental Health.
- Participants will be able to identify strategies for embedding Infant Mental Health into state EHDI programs.
- Participants will be able to describe principles of reflective consultation.

Elizabeth Seeliger, AuD, is the Wisconsin Sound Beginnings Program Director and has worked as a clinical audiologist in a variety of settings, helping guide children and families through the process of hearing loss diagnosis and intervention. Elizabeth has been a leader in developing a data, tracking and referral system; educational resources for hospitals and providers; and an interactive notebook for parents. Elizabeth spearheaded the initiative to enable Wisconsin homebirth midwives to provide UNHS. Elizabeth has also provided technical assistance and consultation locally and internationally on quality improvement in EHDI systems. Elizabeth served on the board of directors for the WI Chapter of Families for Hands & Voices and Hands & Voices HQ. She is endorsed in Infant, Early Childhood and Family Mental Health.
