Empowering Parents: Navigating the Birth to Three Period to Reach Desired Outcomes
Attendees will learn about the importance of supporting and empowering parents and caregivers from the point of a child's newborn hearing screening through school age. Parents report a need for different types of supports at different points in their family journey and audiologists, educators, speech-language pathologists and other early intervention professionals are in a unique position to provide or facilitate support of families across time. This session will provide information and strategies that will help families and professionals learn how to identify desired outcomes together as well as and address myths vs. facts related to hearing loss. Additionally, the important roles of parents/caregivers and other family members will be addressed and strategies that facilitate the growth and development of the child and family across time will be shared. Results of a survey of parents of children ages 3 months to 20 years will be shared to inform attendees of the varying concerns and joys experienced by families along their journey. Attendees will be encouraged to identify at least one "takeaway action" at the end of the session that will change their professional practice and/or family experience.
- Participants will describe the components of EHDI and their interface with and impact on parents during the EHDI process.
- Participants will recognize strategies for successful partnering with parents/caregivers by learning how to listen to, interact with, and support families in identification of their desire outcomes.
- Participants will identify relevant written resources and tools that can be shared with families whom they serve.

Gayla Hutsell Guignard is the Chief Strategy Officer for the Alexander Graham Bell Association. She was the Indiana State EHDI Coordinator for six year and also spent two years as the inaugural Director of the Indiana Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education. Gayla also as many years of direct experience in providing services to children who are deaf/hard of hearing and their families and training of undergraduate and graduate audiology, speech-language pathology and deaf education students. Gayla's work as an audiologist, speech-language pathologist, certified listening and spoken language specialist, and non-profit and government program administrator has provided her with multi perspectives of the field.

Julie Swaim

Julie Swaim is participating in this presentation in her role as Early Intervention Parent Consultant for the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell). Julie's oldest child lost his hearing from meningitis at age 10 months. Julie has dedicated the last 30 years of her life to helping her son communicate, successfully navigate school, launch into adult life, and, ultimately, to helping other parents and family members learn about hearing and deafness and available resources. Julie served on the Council of Volunteers and Organizations for Hoosiers with Disabilities (COVOH) and the Indiana State Advisory Council for Children with Special Needs. Since 2010, Julie has worked part-time for the Indiana EHDI Program as a parent consultant. Julie has been a bilingual (English/Spanish) Parent Guide with Guide By Your Side in Indiana. She is passionate about helping families find their way on their journey.
