The Road to Kindergarten-Readiness: How to Do It

Historically, K-12 Deaf students have not achieved much academic success. There are a few explanations for their lack of success. Data from California SB210 highlights some of the issues. California Association of the Deaf’s (CAD) The Road to Kindergarten Readiness: Language Policy for Deaf Children Ages 0-5 outlines some of the reasons and proposes a renewed focus on intervention strategies for families with Deaf children ages 0-5. Written with stakeholders such as parents, Deaf Education professors, early intervention specialists, advocates, and D/HH education professionals, the report covers the historical reasons for K-12 Deaf students’ academic struggles, current barriers to Deaf babies and toddlers’ language acquisition and Kindergarten-readiness, and recommendations to remedy their K-12 academic struggles.

  • They will understand why K-12 Deaf students continue to struggle academically.
  • They will learn why intervention strategies for families with Deaf children are critical to language acquisition.
  • They will be able to advocate for certain strategies to help the Deaf child and their families.
