The Foundations of Self-Regulation
This presentation will look at the importance of parent-child interactions and how parent response shapes a child’s ability to focus and self-regulate not only in childhood, but also throughout their lives. We will look at the concepts of serve and return, responsive parenting, and executive function, and how these impact the growth and development of the young deaf or hard-of-hearing child.
- Understand the importance of parent-child interaction as it relates to the development of self-regulation
- Explain the concept of executive function as it relates to young deaf/hard-of-hearing children
- Identify strategies that can be used to support development of health self-regulation in young children

(Primary Presenter), Texas School for the Deaf, mari.hubig@tsd.state.tx.us;
Mari Hubig has been a Deaf Education teacher for 25 years, and 20 of those years have been dedicated to working with families with children in early intervention services (birth to three). In addition to Deaf Education, Ms. Hubig also has a background in Primary Montessori education. She is currently the Birth-3 Outreach Specialist at the Statewide Outreach Center at the Texas School for the Deaf. She provides both local and statewide trainings and support to both teachers of the deaf/hard of hearing and to early interventionists working with families of young children who are D/HH.
