Follow-up to the Infinity
The VA EHDI program has strived for excellence in ensuring all children have access to timely services. Early on, Virginia provided EHDI-IS access to birthing facilities, Pediatric Audiologists and Early Intervention Providers to meet CDC’s 1-3-6 goals. Virginia designed a follow-up team with each team member focusing on one area of the 1-3-6 methodology. However, In 2016, Virginia realized that follow-up activities should not depend on availability of staff and redesigned the follow-up model to reflect more automated activities. Virginia has continuously had a 98% screening rate. This highlighted the need for additional surveillance of the birthing hospitals to ensure that accurate and appropriate information was captured. Due to turnover in hospital staffing, VA EHDI realized the importance of providing frequent training.
The VA EHDI program has always strived for excellence in screening, diagnosis and providing intervention services. In 2016, VA EHDI made approximately 3,000 calls to parents and mailed approximately 21,300 letters to PCPs and Parents. In an effort to contact families in a timely manner, VA EHDI expanded its’ follow-up efforts to continue to meet the needs of stakeholders, consumers and advances in technology. Recently, VA EHDI has incorporated automated texting and made several updates to easily capture screening and audiological data.These include creation of a pending list for Rescreening and Audiological users, automated referral to EI Providers, and the ability to capture detailed referral and outcomes data for children with hearing loss.
The VA EHDI program is continuously working to make EHDI-IS user friendly while still gathering optimal data. These enhancements allow Virginia to provide thorough follow-up from screening to diagnosis. This session will outline the changes to the follow-up process and the quality improvement methods used and will hopefully serve as a guideline for other states wishing to make enhancements in their program model and system.

Daphne Miller is currently the Early Hearing Detection & Intervention Coordinator for the Virginia Department of Health. The VA EHDI Program ensures all infant's hearing is screened at birth and if children are diagnosed with hearing loss they are referred to Early Intervention. Daphne has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and has worked with families and children over 15 years. In her spare time she enjoys binge watching shows, listening to music and spending time with family and friends. Daphne resides in Richmond, Virginia with her husband and daughter.

Deepali Sanghani

Deepali Sanghani is the CMV Follow-Up Coordinator for the Virginia Department of Health, Virginia Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (VA EHDI) Program. Deepali has a Bachelors of Science in Psychology and a Masters in Public Health. Deepali has worked in Public Health for over 5 years and has a passion for helping others. In her role with VA EHDI, she oversees hearing screening and cCMV screening follow-up. In her spare time Deepali enjoys reading, listening to music and spending time with family and friends. Deepali resides in Richmond, Virginia with her husband and two daughters.

Antoinette Vaughan

Antoinette Vaughan has served as a Follow-Up Specialist with the Virginia EHDI Program for six years. Prior to this, she had eleven years of clinical nutrition work experience. Antoinette has an Associate Degree in Hospitality Management & Dietetic Specialization and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Family & Consumer Science with Dietetic Specialization. In her spare time, she enjoys researching health and nutrition topics and writing articles for a health & beauty blog site. She enjoys nature walks, experiencing different cuisines, reading, and watching late night television.
