Navigating Pediatric Audiology with 1-3-6
The Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Audiology Department has performed a quality improvement project that pertains to the way in which services are delivered for EHDI cases within their organization. This project allowed for an in-depth look at the current state of the JCIH 1-3-6 goals at CHW. In this presentation they will explore how a new program structure and program implementation has changed the departments 1-3-6 timeline and provided more appropriate and timely hearing screening, diagnosis and intervention. This presentation will go in-depth into hearing screening, pediatric diagnostic audiology and services provided for intervention. This presentation will also go in-depth into 3 case studies to examine the need and/or better care coordination and audiolgic follow-up for at-risk babies within the CHW system.
- • Understand the JCIH 1-3-6 recommendations and how they are applied at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin through specific case examples.
- • Evaluate a hospital based EHDI program and identify barriers to meeting JCIH 1-3-6 goals.
- • Develop strategies to implement better system management and more effective programs for early hearing detection and intervention.

Dr. Sawher is a Pediatric Audiologist at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin (CHW). At CHW, Dr. Sawher is also the Wisconsin EHDI-Tracking Referral and Coordination (WE-TRAC) Administrator. Dr. Sawher has been involved in the EHDI system and other outreach and pediatric groups including Wisconsin Sound Beginnings Workgroups, the EHDI Student Involvement Subcommittee for EHDI 2017 & 2018 and the EHDI Planning Committee since 2017. Dr. Sawher has also worked as a liaison to the American Academy of Audiology (AAA) Advocacy Council and is a current member of the AAA’s Government Relations Committee. Dr. Sawher is passionate about patient advocacy and creating systems of support for patients and their families through inter-disciplinary practice and research efforts. Dr. Sawher has clinical experience in the areas of electrophysiological testing (sedated and non-sedated procedures), newborn hearing screening, behavioral diagnostic testing, fitting of amplification and other assistive listening devices, and interdisciplinary specialty care teams.

Brooke Flesher

Brooke Flesher is currently a 4th year Doctorate of Audiology student at Purdue University and the 4th year Doctoral Extern at the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. She is the current EHDI Student Involvement Subcommittee Chair and serves on the Student Academy of Audiology (SAA) communications committee, as well as the membership committee for the Academy of Doctors of Audiology (ADA). Brooke's research experience includes projects pertaining to the EHDI population and pediatric audiology outreach. Brooke's clinical experiences to date include Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, SSM Dean Clinic, and Peyton Manning Children's Hospital. Brooke is passionate about everything related to pediatric audiology, and especially loves working with families through the newborn hearing screening and identification journey.
