Monitoring the Fidelity of Early Intervention Services for Children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
In an ever changing field, professionals are constantly challenged to provide high quality early intervention services to families. There are many critical areas of development to teach to families while also being a coach and providing family support. Discover a new assessment/planning tool developed to give providers a guideline of information to share with families and to create growth plans. This tool can be used as a self-assessment for providers to work to make change in their practices. It can also be used with a supervisor or mentor to help evaluate and set professional development goals. Using several categories, it looks carefully at how we teach parents to use the necessary strategies to help their child develop age appropriate speech, language, and listening skills. It examines a provider’s knowledge and ability to provide high quality services and also looks at their ability to impact change in parent behaviors as well.
- Participants will learn how to evaluate the quality of their intervention specific or early childhood deafness.
- Participants will identify at least 2 professional areas to target over the next 12 months and identify objectives to make change.
- Participants will list at least 4 strategies used to teach parents to strengthen their child’s auditory feedback loop.

Dr. Christine Yoshinaga-Itano is a Research Professor, Institute of Cognitive Science, Professor Emerita, Department of Speech, Language & Hearing Sciences, at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and Visiting Professor, University of Witwatersrand, South Africa, Centre for Deaf. She has over 125 published articles and chapters with a focus on universal newborn hearing screening and predictors of developmental outcomes of children with hearing loss with an emphasis on children and families from multicultural/linguistic backgrounds, and those with socio-economic and linguistic challenges. She presented on this topic throughout the United States and globally. She received Honors from the American Speech/Language & Hearing Association and was a Jerger Career Research Awardee from the American Academy of Audiology. She serves as an Associate Editor for the International Journal of Audiology and is a member of the Audiology committee for the International Association of Communication Sciences and Disorders (IALP).

Nanette is a an SLP and a LSLS Cert. AVT. She works closely with the Listen Foundation and the Colorado Home Intervention Program, University of Colorado Hospital, and Rocky Mountain Cochlear Implant Center providing diagnostic services and weekly speech, language, and listening therapy to families, children, and adults.
She also provides training and mentoring to professionals across the United States in the areas of parent coaching, auditory skill development, language expansion, and speech production.
