Maximizing Auditory Access for Children with Hearing Loss
For children to learn successfully using audition, it is essential that technology is performing optimally. The goal of technology is to provide access to auditory information so the child can use listening for the development of speech and language. We cannot assume that because children are wearing hearing aids, Baha’s, or cochlear implants, that they are hearing well. Only by careful evaluation can we determine if a child has sufficient auditory access. This presentation will discuss what to look for in an audiological evaluation; how to determine if speech perception is sufficient. The role of the LMH test and other speech perception tests will be discussed and video's will be used to demonstrate testing.

- Attendees will understand how to communicate problems observed with other clinicians working with the child

Jane Madell, Ph.D., is a leader in and known worldwide for her outstanding contributions to the field of audiology and pediatric hearing loss. She has been a Pediatric Audiologist for more than 50 years. Jane has contriubted to numerous text books and articles, presented at countless conferences, and been issued high awards for her work. She directed the Audiology program at the League for the Hard of Hearing for 21 years; was the Director of the Hearing and Learning Center and Co-Director of Cochlear Implant Center at Beth Israel Medical Center and New York Eye and Ear Infirmary for 15 years. Jane consults and lectures nationally and internationally on hearing loss in infants and children and assists in program development. She is a recipient of the Marion Downs Award for Excellence in Pediatric Audiology.

Joan Hewitt

Dr Hewitt is a pediatric audiologist at Project Talk and faculty in the speech-language pathology department at California State University San Marcos. With advanced degrees in both audiology and auditory-oral education of the deaf, she specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss in children, cochlear implant programming, and the maximizing of auditory performance, and complex pediatric cases. She has just published a textbook with Dr Madell titled From Listening to Language and she lectures nationally and internationally.
