ABSTRACT INFORMATION
Title: 'Audiology for Parents and Clinicians: Diagnostics' Track: 2 - Audiological Services Keyword(s): Audiology/Hearing Testing; Audiograms Learning Objectives: Describe the major components of the audiogram format (Frequency/Hz and Intensity/dB HL); the Air Conduction and Bone Conduction symbols; and the types and severities of hearing loss. Detail the major auditory electrophysiologic tests such as ABR, OAEs, and tympanometry; and the behavioral measures of VRA and Conditioned Play Audiometry. Describe the relationship of hearing test results and the needed appropriate hearing sensory technology such as hearing aid(s), cochlear implant(s), and/or Hearing Assistive Technology. Abstract: For parents and many clinicians, the world of audiology is a world of 'acronym soup' and a variety of terms and details that are difficult to completely or truly understand. At the same time, for all of us raising and/or working with children who are deaf or hard of hearing, Audiology must be the 'foundation' of listening and spoken language intervention programs. It is the purpose of this presentation to 'demystify' and make complete sense of the process of hearing testing for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers; along with the audiogram,and the range of behavioral and auditory electrophysiological measures used with our children. The 'fitting' range and candidacy for various assistive technologies such as hearing aids and cochlear implants will be briefly highlighted based on the varied audiometric findings. It is the expectation that the participants will walk away with a clear handle on an elusive topic and be better able to describe hearing testing with confidence and clarity! Goldberg is a Professor of Communication at the College of Wooster (Ohio), and a Consultant on the Professional Staff with the Hearing Implant Program at the Cleveland Clinic’s Head and Neck Institute. Dr. Goldberg is the former Executive Director of the Helen Beebe Speech and Hearing Center in Easton, Pennsylvania. Don is a Past President of the AG Bell Academy for Listening and Spoken Language and Past President of AG Bell. Dr. Goldberg completed his master’s degree in speech- language pathology in 1979 and his Ph.D. in auditory rehabilitation in 1985 from the University of Florida. He is dually certified in speech-language pathology and audiology. Dr. Goldberg is also a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist, Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist (LSLS Cert. AVT).
