Abstract: |
Early detection and treatment of congenital hearing loss is a significant predictor of language success for children with hearing loss (Yoshinaga-Itano et al., 1998; Moeller, 2000). One of the most critical components in effectively identifying newborns with hearing loss and connecting them with intervention is successful follow up and tracking of those infants through the screening, diagnosis, and early intervention stages. Virginia EHDI has used evaluation data to inform programmatic decisions in 3 major domains in an attempt to improve followup rates: 1) integration of EHDI screening and follow-up data into the electronic birth certificate system, 2) tracking and follow-up of children by EHDI staff, and 3) identification of and action to address gaps in resources. Since the implementation of these changes, Virginia has made marked improvements in the percentage of children who are lost to follow-up (13.3% in 2011 vs. 58.5% in 2010). This presentation will examine data used to inform the integration of EHDI and birth certificate data, the tracking process, and resource needs. It will also highlight the resulting programmatic decisions the subsequent improvements in lost to follow-up rates. |
